Question Honeywell TH8320WF Heat Pump Uses Aux. Heat Only

I replaced an old Honeywell TH5220D1029 thermostat with a Honeywell TH8320WF back in June, cooling is working fine, however when changing to heating, the heat pump never turns on, instead, the auxiliary heat is always turned on, on the TH8320WF, it displays "heat on", not "aux. heat on".

I have a dual fuel heat pump /w (electronic)emergency heat and (oil furnace)aux. heat. The thermostat is connected to a Trane Add On Heat Pump controller (showing below), and the old TH5220D wiring is also showing below, I wired the TH8320WF exactly the same as the old TH5220D.

If I place the old TH5220D back, then everything works fine, heat pump can turn on (display "heat on") and whenever need, it will change to the aux. heat (display "aux. heat on"). I accessed and checked the old TH5220D settings as below:

1 System Type: 5 2 heat/1 cool heat pump (with aux. heat)
2 Changeover valve(O/B terminal): 0 (O/B terminal energized in cooling)
6 Stage 2 heat cycle rate/Aux. heat cycle rate (CPH): 9 For electronic furnaces
8 Emergency heat cycle rate (CPH): 9 For electronic emergency heat

On the new TH8320WF, I set the 0170 to 7, 0190 to 0.

So is this a wiring issue or a setting issue? from the display, it looks like the TH8320WF sends signal for turning on heat pump, however, it actually triggered the aux. heat, the heat pump never turns on.

How do you have the auxiliary and emergency terminals wired on the TH8320WF?
Did you configure that thermostat to match exactly how you programmed the TH5220D1029 ?

I wire the TH8320WF bsically the same as the TH5220D, both emergency and aux
.wire go to the E/AUX terminal on the TH8320WF.

On TH8320WF, 0170, I select 7, the setting on TH5220D was 2 heat/1 cool with aux. heat, I cannot find exactly the same settings on TH8320WF.

I suggest these settings to see how it operates:

0170-7
0173-0
0180--1
0190-0
0200-0
0220-3
0240-9

I suggest you do the tests starting on page 8 to verify functions.

These are how the TH8320WF is set, except the 0180 which is not accessible.

Even worse, when I tried to put the old TH5220D back, the heat pump no longer turn on now, it triggers the aux. heat as the TH8320WF does.

Sounds like a wiring problem if both thermostats create the same behavior. I suggest you remove the wires from the Aux/E terminal. Then try to see if the the pump will run in a/c mode. If it does, then replace only the white wire on the Aux/E terminal and set the thermostat to heat.

I think I got something wrong now: I tried to check cooling, however, even the TH8320WF shows "Cool On", the Aux. heat was actually turned on, still, the heat pump didn't start...

Is it time for service call?
