Gree PTHP wiring to White Rodgers UP300 programmable T-stat

Hi,

I live in an apartment with PTAC units and remote T-stats, my PTAC unit died so I replaced it with a new Gree PTHP but my existing T-stat was not compatible with the heat pump.

There is a ten wire harness in the wall to the PTHP so I knew I could get a new T-stat and wire it up. I bought the White Rodgers UP300 to use and wired it up but the PTHP only uses the electric resitance heat when in heat mode.

The PTHP has the following connections:
R - 24 VAC
W - Electric/Heat
Y - Compressor
O - Reversing Valve
GH - High Fan
GL - Low Fan
C - Common

The old PTAC had all of the wires connected except for the O. I connected the O to the new PTHP and then at the white rodgers T-stat I connected the following.

O----O
Y----Y
G----GL (I know the fan will operate in low mode)
Y Jumpered to W (W on the unit is not connected)
C----C
R----R

The old T-stat had Y, G, C, W, R connected.

Currently I left the W wire not connected to the white rodgers - do I need to connect it to the W2 as the second stat (electric heat)? I can clarify if this is confusing in any way. The old PTAC and T-stat were both Carrier models. Thanks in advance for the help.

I would land the W wire on W at the stat. Leave the jumper in place. Have you set the switches on the back of the stat?

I tried putting the W wire in the W on the stat and got a wiring error status on the PTHP.

The switches are set to elec and "O"

The PTHP manual is here:
http://www.gree-etac.com/docs/Gree%20ETAC%20OM.PDF

I am going to try the W wire to W2 when I get home after work today.

Did you set dip switches 1 and 2 on the unit? If dip switch 1 is set in the UP position only the electric strips will be used for heat. If it is set to the down position then the heat pump will provide first stage heating.

As Skaggsje stated, the W wire should be connected to the W terminal on the thermostat.

Did you set thermostat Option 3 to On1 as outlined in section 3.3 of the installation manual:

Glad to hear you got it working and thanks for letting us know. I was just getting ready to post an excerpt from a thermostat wiring diagram that showed the W wire going to W2 on a similar unit. (see attached)
