furnace wont stop

My furnace is running constantly.

Last fall we installed a new programmable thermostat, 3M Filtrete 3M22. It worked fine all winter.

This fall the furnace turns on and runs. forever. The target temp on the thermostat is set for 68. Current temp 77, and the furnace is still running, blowing hot. I have turned it off at the thermostat, and the furnace stopped, and the temperature in here is slowly going down.

I noticed it doing this once last week and redid all the programming for what temp I wanted it to be at what time.

Do need to replace the thermostat again? Could it be a short in the wires somewhere? I did go down today and replace the extremely dirty filter on the furnace.

I do not want to see what my gas bills are if this problem continues.

I suggest you remove the wire from the W terminal on the thermostat. If the furnace stops then it would point to a thermostat issue. If it continues to run there is another issue.
