Ah that makes sense, the gap initially was 8c, the gap in my later test was 2c.

Thanks again guys, it's been a great learning experience!

I am measuring 100F air entering my condensers today. It is hard to imagine running a heater.

Lol, yeah we get those kinds of temps in our summer's too. I used to live in Adelaide which is always a few degrees hotter than Melbourne and in summer 13/14 it reached over 46c or about 115f - now that was HOT even for us South Aussies!

Another question for you fine folks, yesterday it was around 2-3c overnight and I woke up to find the ODU 85% covered in ice.

As a result I had another look thru the service manual (linked in these pages) and it lists the "aux. heat" mode as a defrost mode (not a heat strips "turbo heat" type mode) to be used below 5.5c. So after a bit more reading on the Nest, I set my Nest to "Heat pump balance" = off (set as balanced prior) and the "AUX lockout temperature" to 6c.

This morning it wasnt quite as cold (only 5-6c) but my ODU wasnt covered in Ice so I'm hoping this was the right move?

PS the other reason I disabled "Heat pump balance" was because despite not wanting "early on" enabled (it's off) the nest still fires up the heater early when I dont want my upstairs above 18c till after I wake up around 6am. With any of the other balance settings it was firing up the ODU at 4am causing us to wake up hot around 5-5:30am!
