I have a new RTH9580 and over the last 3 months it has started the heat when the room temperature is well below the setting threshold. The heat continues to run until i turn the breaker off and back on. It is possible i have a short i a wire or is this a thermostat malfunction?

Welcome to the forums.
It could be a thermostat problem.
Have you tried removing it from the base and see if the heat shuts off ?
Is this a heat pump system ??
You may have a problem with the sequencer that controls the electric heating coil and blower

yes this is a heat pump, Coleman, and yes we have tried removing the thermostat to see if it shuts off the heat without success. Here is what the thermostat showed on Sunday when it kept heating: ![Name: IMG_1112[1].jpg

How do i determine if it is an issue with the heat pump sequencer?

Go to the furnace and disconnect the R and G from the furnace control board..... if it has one. If you still get heat... the sequencer is probably at fault.
You may need to post us some pictures of your furnace wiring as Coleman/Evcon can be a hard to find written wiring diagrams online. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html
A model number could be helpful.
