Powering An Uninstalled Thermostat

Can a wireless thermostat be powered without connecting to the system?
I have a Lux GEO thermostat that seems to not be reading the air temperature incorrectly. I would like to put the previous wireless thermostat back in place to compare but the Lux, obviously, would need power to read.
Thanks
Edit to add: There is no C wire in use. The unit is battery powered but does have a usb power input

These are wifi thermostats..... not wireless.
The Lux GEO is a universal system compatible thermostat that offers 3-power options: 2 AA Lithium batteries, a micro-USB, or the C-wire.

Thanks, both of you. So there should not be any danger of damaging the thermostat while powered up and not connected to anything (I guess this a clearer question than what I wrote)?

You can use the thermostat without being attached to the HVAC system it will not hurt the device at all.

Keep in mind you cannot hold the thermostat to check it.
Your body heat will cause it to show warmer.
