Question Options for smart thermostat with 12V, C and D wires?

Hi forum,

Our current set up:

Thermostat has the following wires: 12V, GND, C and D (see pics)

Our AC - Rheem RA1648AJLNA:

Find product information, documents, videos, and installation assistance for the Rheem RA1648AJ1NA

Our current thermostat:

https://www.homecontrols.com/homecon...R65-Manual.pdf

Seems like the most common start thermostats (ex. ecobee, nest) will not work with a 12V or D wire.

Are there any "smart" or at least WiFi capable thermostats out there that would work with our wire setup?

Thanks.

This is a sophisticated multiplexing system. Your system uses four wires to control many functions and two way communications for system performance. You would need to check at the air handler for where the thermostat wiring connects to see if there is an EIM (control module) that could be removed.

You would also need to see if you have enough wires between the thermostat location and the air handler. Most systems require 7-8 wires...... depending on what you have.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply, and info!

Makes sense now regarding the type of system, since we also have a "Smart Vent" connected to the thermostat controller. More info on that for reference:http://villara.com/wp-content/upload...chure-2014.pdf

See pages 10 and 12 for how the Smart Vent is operated by our current thermostat:

http://villara.com/wp-content/upload...-HO-Manual.pdf

We scheduled an HVAC "tune up" and inspection from the company who installed it all to see what our options are.
