Replacing thermostat can I just leave R wire hanging?
Old thermostat: Halin A3602 terminals labeled G C R W Y RC/O RH/B with the last two having a jumper between them
new thermostat: qunda as-hvac10 terminals labeled C G W Y RC RH with the last two featuring a pre installed jumper.
As you can see there is 1 extra cable in the old thermostat. Can I safely tape it off and leave it in the box or do I need it for the system to work.

A quick look at the manual showed thay the R should be placed in one of the jumpered terminals on the new thermostat along with the jumper. Wired it up that way and it works. Bonus unlike the old thermostat it works without batteries. I thought thats because the C wasnt connected at the transformer but it turns out it was just badly seated in the old thermostat’s terminal.

The company name is Hailin.
Rc and RH are associated terminals are usually jumpered if there is one red wire.
O/B are usually one terminal with the function selected in the stat.
At the very least I'd need to see a pic of the wiring on the old stat.
These look like basic inexpensive stats from China.
Very little online support for them.

Your new stat is nothing like the old one.
The old one has an R connection.
The jumper looks like it jumps Rc and Rh together but I'm not sure where they get the O and B from.
O and B refer to heat pump connections. Nothing to do with R.
Strange.
