how to measure for a new toilet seat (exactly) and where to purchase specific seat

How do I measure for a perfect fit on a toilet seat. It seems I always get one that is too big (elongated) or too short. ~sigh~

Also, I would like to purchase an American Standard Rise and Shine seat (or similar). This seat is the kind with a bar that attaches to the bowl and the seat and lid snap off/on (no tools) for easy cleaning.

Any bricks and mortar stores that carry these at a reasonable price. I have seen them online for $50! :O

Nothing like taking a sample to the store. I work a parts counter and would much rather have the old dirty "I need one of these" on the counter than some alphabet soup of a part number.

If you don't have the old seat, then make a tracing of the bowl's rim. If you can see any name or model on the toilet, take note of it.

There are two sizes of toilet seats, elongated and round front.

Find the rise and shine seat at a local plumbing supply house that sells American Standard Products.
