flange on wax ring

How deep in to the toilet drain should the flange on the wax ring go down. The one I bought seems on the short side.

Cool

If this is an ABS black plastic or PVC white plastic flange, it has to go far enough into the closet bend (drain pipe) to be securely glued with the appropriate glue (ABS or PVC).
The flange also should be securely bolted to the top of the finished floor with only the thickness of the flange above floor level for the wax ring to seal properly.
The toilet is then leveled and bolted to the flange.
Good Luck!

not replacing that

The thing that is bolted to the floor is fine and it is metal of some sort. This house was built in the early 60's. When I set the wax ring with the plastic flange on it in the floor, it doesn't go down all that far. It does not make contact with the straight part of the drain. I can feel a gap between the two. The old one appears to be a bit longer and goes down farther. Should I feel this gap? Do they make wax rings with longer flanges?

Cool

Aha, now I get you. It's the wax ring that you're asking about.
If that metal flange is bolted to the top of your finished floor level, any wax ring should seal just fine (with or without the plastic on it). Don't worry about any "gap" with that. The wax ring itself will do the sealing between that metal flange and the horn under the base of the toilet.
Good luck!
