Leaky faucet on wall mounted cast iron enamel sink

My old faucet on my on wall mounted cast iron enamel sink (20's era?) is dripping and I am not sure how to fix it.

If I need to replace washers how do I get it apart to do so? I took the handle off and there was a brass ring and a hard round black beveled piece (looks like a washer, but the hardware store guy assures me it is not), but the cartridge (not sure if that is right term) won't come out. HELP! I have searched the web but can't find anything on repairing old faucets. Thanks!!!

Shut the water to the lavy off and pull one of the stems (hot or cold -- doesn't matter.) Take the stem to a plumbing supply house, a big box store, or a really knowledgable hardware store. They should be able to identify the valve from the stem you bring in and set you right up with the right parts. (That's assuming that the faucet isn't OBSOLETE!!) At worst, you'll have to just replace the faucet -- $75 plus whatever the wife wants for appearance!!!

That certainly sounds like a washer to me. I replaced one just like it a year ago.

Like how old. Water turned off. open valve some.take packing nut there off. open the valve all the way and it should screw up and out. On bottom should be that washer take the small screw out and the rubber wisher should come out. Get new one just like it and put in put small screw back in it .Then put it all back the way you took it out Cost about .25 cents ED

If you are going to remove the entire faucet, you need a special tool. Can't remember what it's called, but you stick it into the part of the faucet that is attached to the sink. The part has a hexagonal? shaped outside so it fits into the faucet part and allows you to twist it out. You can buy it at Home Depot in the plumbing tools section.

Our wall mount facuet (also 1920s) was obsolete and parts were not available. Nice new wall mount faucets are hard to find. We ended up ordering from Antique Home & Hardware. Renovators Supply also has some faucets. The new faucet works great.

The holes on old wall mount sinks are larger than modern sink holes. Our new faucet barely fits the holes-we had to position it very carefully. Check the measurements before you order a faucet.

You MUST use teflon tape on old pipes to seal the leaks.
