tub & shower faucet replacement
I am replacing my tub/shower surround. I have the tiled walls down so I have nothing but my studs and shower/tub faucet showing.
I want to replace my Three-Handle Tub & Shower Faucet. How hard is it to change the 3 handle to something else? I don't see a large selection of 3 handle faucets, are they fazing out??? I see A LOT of the single and double handle faucets .
So how hard would it be to switch and will it be expensive. I am going to replace the old with new, know matter what, I need to upgrade. I will stick with the three-handle if it is going to be real difficult and expensive to switch. Should I replace my Faucet before or after I put up my hardibacker board for my new tile surround, if I swith to a different style (single or double faucet) that is, lol.
And a big question, in your opinion which brand faucet is the best for the money? I can't afford the high priced stuff, I guess less than $150.00. Way less would be a whole lot better
Thanks for your help,
Darla

tuckerdarla,
If you are down to looking at the studs, you can put in pretty much whatever you want to. The expense is simply the cost of a new valve. You have to put the new valve in BEFORE you start sealing up the wall.
BRAND -- (This is kinda like is a Ford or a Chevy better!!) Moen, Elger, Delta, American Standard, ... get one that you can find replacement and repair parts for!! Saving a few bucks now and getting one that no parts are available for will cost you BIG bucks in the long run. If you can't repair it, you'll be going through this all again to REPLACE IT!!!

The reason why there is a lack of 3 handle faucets is due to code revisions where new construction homes are required to have pressure balanced assemblies to protect from scalding. These faucets are designed with a spindle that moves with the pressure fluctuations from hot to cold.
Here is a example of how these devices work. http://www.deltafaucet.com/aboutdelta/scald_guard.html
These devices also provide cold shocks from occuring also, which prevents users with epilepsy from going into epileptic shock.

How to replace a three handle tub & shower faucet
Hi and thanks for your replies,
I am going to replace the Three-Handle Tub & Shower Faucet with a single handle. Does anyone know how to do it? I was told that I need to cut the pipes and use a torch to convert the three-handle to a single. Is there a web site that can tell me step-by-step how to do it.
I don't do well with water, lol. I tried fixing a leak in our bathroom sink down stairs and sort of didn't tighten the pipes under the sink, welllll.... left for awhile and when I returned home water was everywhere.
Needless to say, I am very apprehensive about doing plumbing. I can't afford to hire a plumber, so I need to get over it.
TIA,
Darla
