Offset Closet Flange

Should I be worried about using an offset closet flange (i.e. Closet PVC Flange Offset 3 X 4 inch by Oatey) for my toilet? I roughed-in the new toilet drain before I realized that the wall behind the new toilet was way out of plumb. Now that the wall is shimmed, the drain is only 10.5" from the wall (2" offset is perfect). Offset Flange or rip it out and start over?

I try to avoid them as much as possible for the fact that depending on the style of offset, the johnny bolt is suspended on one side with tabs that will eventually break, and is nightmarish to get a closet auger down the toilet with these flanges.

You can use them, but if your at the stage where the effort to get it right on the money the first time is minimal, I would go this route and make the changes and be done with it, that way the concern for down the road is eliminated.

Thanks for the quick reply...it was what I expected. I may take my chances with the auger trouble because I have a clean out nearby, but what is a johnny bolt? Does the one on this link have a suspended one like you described?

That offset flange is your best bet. There are numerous styles and dimensions to these flanges, and the one your showing is the best of them all.

Johnny bolts are the bolts that anchor the toilet to the flange that are aligned in the slots on closet flange.

Not code approved where I live, plus the ring is painted steel, you can bet give or take a few years, paint will break off the ring, and we all know what happen when bare steel and water stays in contact with each other.

Bad news, the rings will rot away.

So are you saying avoid metal flanges outright then - regardless if its offset or not?

Yes. They disentegrate very quickly.

If you cannot find an offset without a painted steel flange, then you will have to use one. but cover it with the wax ring completely, to slow down the event of rusting.
