shower problems
#1

I am trying to replace the shower valves in my shower.I can not figure out how to get the old valves out. There is a chrome sleeve right behind the knobs and I can not get a wrench to penitrate far enought to unscrew the valves.I have been told that these sleeves should screw off,but as of now I have not found a way to unscrew them.they spin freely so I do not know how they are attached. The hole in the wall comes right up to them without and area to see past them.

You need a set of plumber's valve sockets to find the one that will fit your particular shower valves.
Turn the water off, remove the valves counter-clockwise and replace the o-rings on the valves and the washers on the ends of the stems. Check the valve seats in the wall fittings for corrosion. You may need to replace those as well.
Good Luck!

Mike can you tell me what these chrome pipes comming out of the wall and stopping behind the Knob are and are they replaceable or do you have to buy a new shower assembly?I am trying to figure out it I should cut them out enough to get the socket onto the valve.

You should be able to unscrew those counter-clockwise with a strap wrench (to prevent marring and damage). Or, as a second choice, you can wrap a cloth around them and use a pair of channel-locks or a small pipe wrench to carefully turn them.
They are thin chrome-plated brass, so be careful not to scratch or crush them. Grip them as close to the wall as possible.
Let me know how you're doing.
Good Luck!
