First, call your landlord. It's their responsibility.
Assuming that you have an electric water heater without a cold water supply shut-off valve, you will have to turn the water heater (usually a 30 amp double) breaker off at the electrical panel and the water off at the main shut-off valve.
Remove the handle of the hot water faucet and remove the valve (unscrew it counter-clockwise). You may need to get a set of plumber's valve sockets to reach the hex part of the valve in the wall from the shower side to unscrew it.
Take it to a store and get a replacement valve exactly like it.
