Toilet leak -- what's going on?

I have a leak between the tank and the bowl. As suggested in the FAQ, I've replaced the Tank to Bowl kit but I still have a leak (but not as bad). It's more of a slow drip.

I have emptied and readjusted several times but with no luck.

Could I perhaps have overtightened the bolts?

Have to ask....are the washers touching the tank, inside and outside, the rubber ones? The bolts normally only have to be tightened evenly. It's rare that you would overtighten without hearing that terrible cracking sound (tank cracking).May have to drain again, check that all surfaces are clean, proper alignment of the main gasket, and evenly tighten bolts. Hope this helps. Post back.

Tried again (x4)

Thanks for the advice. I've actually tried redoing it 4 times now...but everytime it leaks either a little more, or a little less, but never perfect.

Could I be completely mis-diagnosing the problem?

If you take it apart again, check that either the tank or bowl is not cracked and allowing a small amout of water to leak. Could have been the original problem.

2nd Tank

Haha...that's funny because last week I couldn't figure out what it was leaking -- then my wife noticed that the tank was cracked (at the top of the tank near the water line).

So now I have a new tank.

I got it to stop leaking (almost). I redid it again trying to ensure that I placed it 100% evenly on the bowl. Stopped most of hte problem except for a 1 drip every 5 minutes. Arrrgh...so close.

When all else fails, drain the tank and dry the washers and tank area around the holes, and smear a little clear silicone caulk on both sides of the rubber washers, and then tighten them down evenly, alternating between the two.
Good luck!

Only use silicon when all else fails.

It will stop the leak for sure, but can corrode some plastic/rubber toilet fittings over time.

I did the silicon thing on a plastic toilet overflow about 5 years ago and as far as I know it has not started leaking again...so maybe the corrosion effect is a bit over stated.
