replacing tub problems removing drain/spud

I need to replace the tub but im wondering what problems I'm likley to run into when removing the spud (I think the drain is called the spud )

its a steel tub probably 25+ years old

I have looked in several plumbing books and only seen brief mentions

Is it likley to be a problem ?

any hints or suggestions aprectiated

The hardest part will probably be removing the drain piece, and you must make sure that you buy a tub with the same exact dimension for drain and oveflow.

They make tubs all different sizes, even though they look familiar.

You might have to get to underside of tub to rework the waste and overflow kit, which is a good idea.
