Broken tub drain

I just tried taking a bath tonight, for the first time in my townhouse (recently purchased), only to find out that the tub drain is broken. The lever to stop up the tub is really loose and flips up and down like it isn't attached to anything. How hard is this to fix, and...how do I fix it so I can take a bath?

Remove the screws that hold the plate on.

Once removed, there is linkage inside of the overflow tube that must come out.

Try fishing it out. a Sneaky Pete will retrieve the linkage which operates the trip and waste.

If you get it out, see what the reason is for why it broke or if a nut on a threaded wire has been lost.

I would consider going to the plumbing store and buying the exact replacement to correct this problem.
