Unhappy black moldy substance in toilet tank

Each component in my toilet tank has an ugly black substance "growing" on it. It is very thick and black - similar to a mold. As a result the toilet bowl constantly has a brown ring around it at the water level. We clean it but it comes back after a few days. I can replace the pieces in the tank (they are quite old anyway), but I suspect this problem might occur again in the new pieces. We have used the "1000 flushes" blue tablets in the past. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello: Gary

Based upon the problem description, the condition is a result of the water supply or bacteria in the toilet tank. The blue bowl cleaners will not disinfect all types and forms of bacteria nor stop the algae growth.

Try drying out the tank after turning off the water supply into it. Hand clean and disinfect the tank, as best as possible, using a cleaning and disinfecting household bathroom cleaning product.

Once the tank is cleaned and dried out, allow it to refill and note the results after several days. If the problem returns, it's in the water supply. But even that would be hard to believe there could be that much bacteria in the water supply to not effect other water using appliances in the house.

Questions than would be, where is the water supplied form?
City water or well water?
Clothes washer and or dishwaster also effected?
Is the water supply potable? Drinkable???

To add to the information - the water supply is a city water supply and there are no known problems with it.

Turn off the water, flush the toilet and clean out the tank with a bleach/water mix.
With the water supply still off, then fill the tank with warm water from the tub, and pour in an enzyme-based drain cleaner like DrainCare. It will eat out all of the algae overnight, but won't harm the toilet or any seals. If it's really bas, you may have to do this more than one night.
Raise the flapper with the handle, and flush the tank out with straight hot water from the tub.
After all of the algae is clear from the tank and its components, turn the water back on.
Good luck!
Mike

Hello: Gary

If there is no other water problems like this elsewhere, than try cleaning the tank as described above and note the results after a few days. The problem than has to be inside the tank. Cleaning it should resolve the condition.

Hi all,

I removed all the old hardware from the tank, cleaned the tank, and replaced the inner workings with all new stuff. The old stuff was really old and I think it was due to be replaced anyway.

I will watch it for a week or so and post back with the results! Thanks for the help.
