Sometimes overflow water, sometimes not

My toilet was acting odd in that sometimes water would flow through the tubing to the overflow tube and sometimes it wouldn't. I couldn't figure out why, so replaced the refill valve with a new Fluidmaster. Everything seemed to be ok, but now its doing it again. The tank still fills, just very slowly and there's no water running into the overflow tube. I pulled the hose off to see if maybe it was clogged or kinked. But the water just dribbles from the nub that once connected to the hose. To make things worse, it doesn't happen everytime. Sometimes water gushes like a jet engine, others a mere trickle.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Are you on a well and pump or public water? Do you have galvanized pipes?
If your water pressure is fairly constant everywhere else, turn the main water valve off, and replace the washer in the toilet tank shut-off valve.
Good luck!
