clogged toilet

I'm sure you've heard the story before . . . My 3yr old grand dau put something in the toilet and now it is clogged. When I realized she was in there, there was an unopened bottle of nail polish and a dime in the bottom of the toilet. After I fished those out, she told me she flushed the toilet before I arrived. I used it and then it almost backed up. we have plunged until the cows come home but it's backed up. we think she put a bunch of baby wipes, yes the ones that don't go in the toilet in there like maybe 1/2 a pack. What to do to clear it?

Try a shop vac to try to remove the obstruction, or

use a closet auger, a device that is a 3 or 6 foot cable with a turn crank on the end that is used to cable the trap of toilet to remove the blockage.

If a closet auger doesn't remove the clog, then you will need to pull the toilet and use a cable machine to fix the problem.

I will get one of those force ball plunger. If that does not work, how heavy and expensive is the closet auger? what else do you use it for?
thanks

Using a force ball plunger MAY just force whatever is in the line, further into the main drain. Closet augers are merely a 3 foot pipe with a handle at the top and about 5 foot of snake cable. It has a plastic coating on the curved end to protect the toilet finish. You stick it into the toilet and then crank and feed the cable into the toilet. You can rent one of these if you don't want to buy one.

since in all honesty my skills are not great, would it be better to try the auger or hire a handyman/plummber. things are flushing through but still nothing solid if you get my drift. hot water seemed to help and i thought it was clear but now realize not. should i try the hot water again?

Cost wise I would rent the closet auger (probably less than $10.00) and they will show you how to use it. You may also want to try a drain cleaner called Drain Care. Sold at HD, Lowes and Walmart. It is an enzyme cleaner that attaches to the clog and eats it.Is an overnight process but still less expensive than having someone else do it.(After all, we are the DIY site).Good luck and post back.

Unhappy I have a clogged toilet also

Hi folks, i have a smiliar problem. My wife accidently dropped the toilet paper roller when she was changing the toilet paper and of course she dropped it when it was flushing. My co-worker told me to move the toilet and the roller should be by the drain. Should i try that? or should i get the closet auger that u guys mention? Any advise are greatly appreicated.

A toilet has a built-in trap. Hopefully you can use a toilet auger through the bowl to get it out without removing the toilet. (Although it's possible, I doubt that it went through the trap.)
If not, you'll have to pull the toilet to try to get it out from underneath.
Good luck!
Mike
