large gap between shower escutcheon & shower wall

There is a large gap between the shower escutcheon & the fiberglass shower/tub wall (1/4 - 1/2"). It had been caulked up by the previous owner- now the caulk has started to separate & mildew so I removed it, cleaned it up & am attempting to re-install. There is not enough clearance between the center portion of the escutcheon & the mounting bracket for the outer edge of the escutcheon to fit flush with the shower stall. I hate to just fill up the space with a ton of caulk & would like it to be done correctly, but do not see any other way to do it. Any suggestions??

Open up back of wall and make the needed adjustments there, this could mean you will have to do a little bit of replumbing of the valve connections thou.

Unfortunately it's a 1 piece shower/tub unit & there is another bathroom with shower on the other side of the wall- so I can't get to it that way....

Well then only other thing I can think of is, this will call for some design work from you, take a piece is hard plastic/ or metal of what ever you might think of, cut out at open circle smaller in diameter the the most other edge of the existing escutcheon and make outside diameter large enough for you to cover up said gap, put the add on under the escutcheon and tighten up and caulk it.

Hope you understand what I'm talking about here, kind of hard to explain in words alone.

If this is a singe handle type shower, it was installed wrong and there is little you can do to fix it. If it is a 2 or 3 handle Price Pfister, it is possible someone just put in the wrong stems. They have shower stems in at least 3 different lengths.

It is a single handle Delta shower faucet. The mounting bracket is actually pushing against the back of the fiberglass shower/tub.

Then I stand by my first post, unless you want to open the wall.
