Small rocks in Toilet tank??
#1

How could this happen?? Had had a plumber out doing some work some time earlier on a house I have out of town? I recently checked the work and found hand full of small rocks in the tank?
Small rocks would keep a flapper from functioning?
Plumber came recommended; Maybe I am just too suspicious but this is odd. Wandering if you ever heard something like this happening?

Depends on what was done on the house, was the water line repaired, cut and fixed?
What did the color of rocks look like, where they maybe rust looking, if rust looking could be from old galvanized pipe if it's in the house.

Thanks for the response; doesn't sound like this is something anyone else has seen;
I am sure over the years there had been some water line work done. but these were true rocks, hard, like gravel, not rust colored but white to tan; most were about 2 time size of end of pencil. too large to have come in through a fill tube? I am coming to believe they had to have been put in there?? About the only answer I can come up with is they had to have been put in the tank. really strange.

Sometimes, people put bags of rocks or bricks in toilet tanks to "conserve" water. Sometimes, chunks of old metal flush handle arms fall apart and drop into the tank. Who knows?
Just remove the loose stuff.

White and tan sound like deposits you would get out of the bottom of a water heater when draining the deposits out annually. However, unless you have a mixer valve on your toilet inlet (to prevent tank condensation), you would not have hot water going to the toilet. And, as you stated they are too large to get thru the toilet fill valve.
I am with Mike, just remove them and everything should be fine.

Rick; Mike;
I did exactly what you suggested when I was in over the weekend working on the water closet at my parents; I took them out; but guys these were small gravel rocks; not parts of a flush handle or hot water heater deposits. I know what you are talking about; been there; done that.
Frankly I thought when I found them this may have been a tricky plumber (?) (no reflection on the professionals in the business) setting up for another service call; maybe a ploy that someone may have seen before but obviously not. You did not respond as if you had ever heard of such a thing occuring and I admit that that is just too far fetched. My father (86 yr's old) was as surprised as I when I showed him the hand full of gravel we took out of the tank. He frankly thought the same thing.
Still a puzzle to me. but thanks for your input.

Jim, I guess it could be a ploy, but I have not heard of anything similar.
I guess you could check the plumber and the ploy with the BBB in your area. Other than that, I am not sure what else you could do.....except find a different plumber for the future.
