Sink faucet turning itself on

Hi. I've got a basic compression-style faucet in my bathroom. The sink does not ordinally leak, but it will occassionally go into fits where the cold water tap will slowly turn itself on. It starts as just a very slow flow, but if left to itself it will get stronger. When it does this I can tighten the handle to turn it off again, and the flow will stop, but a few minutes later it will just start to flow again.

It will behaive like this for 20 minutes or so, and then will eventually just stay off when I shut it off. It all repeats every couple of days. Any advice on what may need fixing? Thanks.

Try removing the handle and see if there is a packing nut. If there is, tighten it a bit. Try the handle and see if it is a bit stiffer to turn. This may solve your problem. Good luck.
