new replacement toilet leak question?
#1

Hi!
I just purchased 2 Eljier complete toilet kits and installed the first one today. And well, i have a problem. Where the tank and toilet go together will not seal off!!! it has a very slow seeping leak in the back, at the back of the black gasket that fits between tank and toilet. I followed instructions, well, its pretty much a no brainer...place gasket over nut, place rubber rings over bolts, place bolts thru holes and tighten. Anyhow, i took it all apart 3 times already and cannot figure out why it wont seal off. HELP, HELP, HELP!

Sounds like you did everything correctly. Since you have to take it apart again, check the porceline (sp?) on both sealing surfaces. When fired, they may have run and are causing a raised surface that is not allowing a smooth surface to seal on. Only other thing I can think of is if you didn't get the bolts tightened evenly and the tank is pulling on one side. Good luck and reply back with any further questions.

If they did leave a rough spot or a ridge, what would i do about it?
I did notice both of the new toilets seemed to have the holes where the nut hole was drilled a little off center leaving the small ridge/ring area that is molded in off center (looks that way to me anyway), would that affect how the gasket is seating? I thought maybe it was just that one tank but i looked, and both were like that, so surely that wouldnt be it, would it?
So if there is a rough spot, is there anything i can do to correct, could i apply some sort of sealant around the ring? or something?
Or could it just be the gasket they put in these kits, should i go buy a separate tank connect kit and see if a different gasket works better?
I am gonna try the tank and gasket that is in the box with the other toilet first and see if i have the same problem with both tanks. But it is sure getting on my nerves putting and taking the off and on over and over!

When all else fails, I just smear a little clear silicone around things and get on with life. That will take care of porcelain faults, things a little off-center, etc., etc. Works for me.
Good luck!

I just did a similar repair on a toilet in a rental property, and with new toilet to bowl gaskets, still had a leak

Counting threads.....WOW
