Toilet water runs when sitting on it

Hello:
My toilet water will run on and off (on for about 2 seconds and then off for 15 seconds or so and repeat the cycle) usually only when someone sits on it. Anyone able to help me with why this is happening and how to fix it. Thanks much and Happy New Year!!! LAL

Sounds like more than one problem. The tank may not be tight to the bowl and when someone leans back, water goes out the overflow pipe which tells the supply valve that the tank needs more water. Check to see if the tank moves back and forth. It could also be allowing water from the tank to leak into the bowl through the connecting gasket at the bottom of the tank. You would have to tighten the bolts. Do this very slowly and make sure to go back and forth to tighten evenly. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. It's easy to break the tank or bowl by "cranking" them too tight.
Which leads to the 2nd problem. The water level in the tank is too high which allows water to go into the overflow pipe. Look inside the tank and there should be a line that is the correct water level. Also look at the current water level and see where it is in relation to the overflow tube.
Make the adjustments and you should not have this problem. Good luck.
