Changed cartridge - water still won't shut off
I replaced my Moen cartridge (1224). The little nub on the handle stem insert is broken off, but the guys at Home Depot assured me that I should still be able to control the water flow, but that the handle will go past the shut off point and turn the water back on if you turn it too far. I have to get a replacement for the stem insert from Moen. Great.
So I did replace the cartridge, I think I lined up the notch on the cartridge to the notch in the pipe and I did get the bonnet back on. But the water still trickles out no matter how much I fiddle with the handle. What the heck am I doing wrong??? Please help!

Get a new handle for the shower valve, make sure it's designed for the shower, there are two types, one is for sink and other is for shower, when looking at bottom of handle, the deeper inset handle connect is for lav sinks only, and will be a problem if used for the shower control, the one for the shower, the handle connect is flush to bottom of handle.
Since you already replace the cartridge then no reason to replace it again.
Now if the new handle does not solve this then there is a chance you have a defective cartridge.

Hmmm. Now I'm really confused. I went to a plumbing supply store to look through their Moen book to identify my faucets (they were here when we moved in). According to the book, the shower/tub is the Monticello, and the handles for the bathroom sink look EXACTLY the same as the handles in the shower/tub.
Anywho, since I have the handle stem insert thingie, I can actually turn the water on and off without reassembling the whole handle mechanism. It saves time in testing. So, it's not clicking in my head why I would have to change the handle.
Does that make any sense at all?
I did read on another board that there is some kind of white, plastic tool that you use to remove and insert some Moen cartridges and that it should come with the new one. Mine didn't, and I had to buy a metal tool to remove the bonnet to get the old cartridge out.

That's close. It's in the bathroom, so no spray nozzle, and the handles are cross-type, not lever. I think this link shows it.

I guess we do! Like I said, they were here when we bought the house. The people before us did some, shall we say, interesting things in here. I guess they wanted them to match???
Does it matter? I mean, for two years we didn't have a problem, and now the hot water side is leaking and I assumed it was the cartridge. Could it be something else?
The weird thing is that the hot water faucet on the sink is starting to feel like it's going to start spinning past the shut off point too. I think my husband tries to tighten them like old fashioned faucets. I tried explaining that it's bad to do that to cartridges. Oh well.

Is this the cartridge?

The tab on the side is what stop the handle from spinning, if it's broken off this you need a new cartridge, can you shut the water totally off with the handle off?

No parts of the cartridge are broken. There is a plastic piece that is threaded lenghtwise, not around, that screws into the cartridge - I believe is is called a handle stem insert, or something like that. That piece matches up to a piece inside the hub & elbow assembly. That is the piece that is broken - there is a little nub on it that would hit part of the cartridge and stop the faucet from turning any farther. I hope I'm explaning that clearly for you! I can't find any pictures of it anywhere, maybe because you wouldn't need it if you were using it in a sink where it belongs, instead of in a shower???
Before I found the cartridge I needed, for about a full week, I had the faucet handle, hub and elbow off and we were just using the stem insert to turn the water on and off. If we fiddled with it we could completely stop the flow, but no more. And I can't do it with the new cartridge either. Maybe that little nub on the stem insert does more than I thought it did. I did read on the Moen site that you're supposed to apply light pressure and turn the cartridge until it "locks", then put on the bonnet. But I can't do that because that little piece is broken off. Maybe I don't have the cartridge seated correctly. In that case, I won't know until I get the replacement part from Moen, and I'm still not 100% sure how to tell them what I'm looking for! Hopefully their people are as good as you've been. I do appreciate all your help! This is so frustrating! It should NOT be this hard!
