tub overflow drain cover and broken screw

well, I just recently bought a condo and decided to clean the buildup of crap out from the overflow drain. In that light, I started to unscrew the cover and the screw snapped off, totally eaten away. So currently, part of the screw is still stuck in there meaning that I can't get another screw in there. I've tried using channel locks to get the bit of screw out (as well as other adjustable wrenches) but to no avail.

I'm hoping that someone might recommend a way of getting that bit of screw out or, if it is ok to just silicon the cover in place?

thanks much, bad picture linked below:

(shiny bit in middle is broken off remainder of screw).
thanks much for any suggestions!

You can drill a small pilot hole in the overflow plate bolt, tap in a small Easy-Out, and unscrew it that way, OR replace the overflow assembly, if you can't.
Good luck!

thanks much - I've never replaced one of these before so not sure of the process?

I ended up drilling the screw out (kind of) drilled a pilot hole in the broken bit and then kept increasing the bit size. In the end the broken off piece ended up getting pushed back in enough that another screw will fit in (unfortunately I just don't have a screw that has the correct combination of length and head size).
thanks much
