Another shower valve problem!

I just moved into a 15 year old house. The shower/tub in the hallway started leaking from the tub spout. Because of the hurricanes here in Florida I didn't have the time to fix it (the roof and water damage took priority), so I removed the spout and plugged it.

Now the shower head is leaking as well. I couldn't wait any longer. I removed the valve handle, and the coverplate. I removed the retaining clip. Now the cartridge won't come out. There seems to be some sort of additional piece inside. It is like a quarter circle that fits inside the cartridge housing. One on top and one on the bottom. It is a thin piece that fits along the inner wall of the cartridge housing. I tried to dislodge it. I tapped it with a hammer. It won't budge.

It will not screw out. The only piece that protrudes out of the housing is the adjusting piece that the handle attaches to. There are no apparent threads.

Any help or thoughts? Please?

Don't know what brand of faucet you have, but sometimes the replacement cartridges come with a little tool made just for them.
Can you grip it with a pair of channel-locks and pull it out?
