removing stem from shower fixtures
i need to replace washer on stem in the shower. i replaced the stem for the water diverter(?) (the one that directs the water to the shower head). the stem for that pulled right out. the stems for the hot and cold water source will not pull out of the pipe. i hope you understand the problem i am having because i know i am not using correct terms, my understanding of plumbing fixtures is none. is there a nut or something holding the water source stems in and if so how do i get to them. any help would be appreciated.

kdiff, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
Turn off the water supply. The handles should have a cap on the end of them that "pops" out (screwdriver usually works for this). Remove the screw that hols them on then the handles. This may be difficult if they have not been off before so be patient. Wiggle, tap or pry being careful not to bend or break the handles. Once the handles are off, remove the chrome cover that goes to the wall. May have to cut some silicone or caulk used for sealer. Once the cover is off, slide the handle back on and unscrew the stems. There MAY be a nut holding it that has to be loosened or removed but not usually. Re-assemble in reverse order. The washers are held on with a screw in the end of the stem. Make sure you get the same type washers. Good luck. Reply back with any other questions.

thanks for reply majakdragon. i believe that there is a nut or something holding the stem in. the stem does not feel as though it is screwed in as it will move freely but i can not pull it out. feels like there is something holding it after i pull it out 1/2 inch or so.

If you have the chrome covers that go to the wall off, you will be able to see the nuts (if there are any) Just a cresent wrench to remove them. If the stems feel loose and move 1/2" in and out they should just pull out or may have to be turned while pulling.

Is there any way you can post a picture of the stem? Possibly I will be able to see what the problem is.
By any chance do you know what brand of faucet this is?
Good luck with your project
