Starting from scratch on a new bathroom

Hello everyone,
I search this forum for a couple of hours and found no answer to my posting, so here it is.

We have decided to add a bathroom to our finished basement (on concrete slab) with a shower, sink and toilet. We have a 6’ X 4’ space. When buying the house the engineer who inspected the house mentioned we could add the bathroom with not much hassle (no need to install a pump for waste, etc…).
I am no expert but have a decent head on my shoulder and can follow directions/instructions. We have a budget of $3,000 for the entire project (material and labor) therefore I am determined to do as much as possible myself. Here are a few questions that I can think of right now (more to come):
1) Can we do it in this space or do I need more room? I can push a wall to make this 6 X 5.
2) What are the things I should start thinking about or doing in preparation?
3) Can I get a list of things that need to be done in this process?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Space is a premium here. Get out some graph paper and start a layout.

You will need a shower stall of a minimum of 900 sq. inches.

The toilet will need 15 inches from center of drain to left and right side and 21 inches in front. This does not include the drain that is 12 inches from the finished wall.

The lavatory will need 21 inches of front clearance to any fixture, door, or wall.

Now, plan your fixtures within this space.

Once you got a plan, someone will help you out on the water and drain issues.

Here is a rough diagram I came up with. Does this make sense to you?

Thanks a lot.

You are pulling permits for this work as there are more than several good reasons why this work should be done to code and inspected. It protects you in the future and the property value to do this work properly.

The 21 inches in front of the toilet has to start at the front of the toilet, not the drain. 15 inches side to side only. You need 30 inches of room for the toilet.

The shower stall is probaby too small.

You have a workable situation, but you need to call your local building department and confirm clearances. They are fairly well uniform under different codes, but you need to check this first. You also need to know what plumbing code is used in your jurisdiction. IPC is different from UPC. This will be important on drainage issues.

Does the building drain go out from the foundation through the floor or out the wall? I will make the assumption there is no plumbing in the ground where you want to build this so busting up concrete is in your future.
