Bathtub in the upstairs bathroom leaks water through downstairs ceiling
We have a 2-story house in Houston, TX. We built it back in 1990. A couple of days ago, I noticed a very slow water leak through downstairs ceiling (this ceiling happens to be right under the bathtub in the bathroom upstairs). The water was slowly dripping while my kid was taking shower. As soon as the shower stopped, so did the water. The affected ceiling area has become very soft (yet not cracked, only a small hole).
What could be the issue and how do I get it fixed? Could it be in the PVC drain pipe under the bathtub that is leaking or one of the PVC joints? Is it best to fix the issue by working from upstairs (by removing the bathtub) or from downstairs (by tearing apart the portion of the affected ceiling)?
thx,
Vijay Parikh

if you have a tub&shower and someone fills the tub all the way to the overflow it could be leaking from there.
if you have a shower only it might be the drain body or the trap that is leaking
also make sure your valve is snug against the wall.
it is going to be easier to access from ceiling below rather than pulling the unit
