Unhappy Kitchen Sink Clogged

I live in a 1980 mobile home. I use Rid-X to keep my drains unclogged. I got lazy this spring and my kitchen sink clogged.

I tried bleach and hot water

I tried draino

I tried a hand-turned snake.

I'm considering renting an electric snake. What do you think?

I would try an enzyme drain cleaner such as Drain Care. Caustic drain cleaners make a hole and then run down the drain leaving the remainder of the clog to rebuild. Enzyme cleaners cling to the clod and "eat" them. It costs about $8 for a jug which is many uses. Follow the label directions. It takes overnight and may (if the clog is really bad) take more than one application. Good luck. This product can be found at Home Centers, Walmart, hardwares and even some grocery stores.

The enzyme cleaner you mention is what Rid-X is. I already tried it and it didn't work.

I believe there is a big difference in Rid-X and Drain Care. Rid-X is a box of dormant bacteria designed to keep your septic working properly. Drain Care is strictly for getting rid of clogs. I did however forget to mention that Drain Care is safe for septic tanks.

OK, that makes sense. I have two products, one is Rid-X. The other I don't remember (I'm at work).

Why won't the snake work? I've got it in about 5-7 ft and it's will go no further. I turned it and turned it and jammed it in as hard as I could. It feels like it's hitting rock.

I will check the snake again when I get home. And then the Drain Care again. Thanks

Hmmm, do you have any trees that may have part of their root system growing into the drainline? Drain Care will NOT work on tree roots. None of the other treatments will either. There are products on the market that make claims to removing tree roots. Claims are all they are. Only way to get rid of a root situation is to dig up and replace a section of pipe. Good luck.

I live in a mobile home, so I don't see how it could be roots, though I haven't crawled underneath the trailer to find out where the pipes go.

Progress so far:

1) When I pulled out the snake, it had a tangle of string and stuff on the end of it. It had gone only 5 ft into the pipe.

2) I have tried the Drain Care twice now. It may be draining a little faster, I'm not sure, but it certainly isn't fixed.

You said you used Rid-X so I am assuming you have a Septic tank. The drainline runs from your house to the Septic or sewer (whichever you have). I asked about tree roots that would be in
between the house and the Septic/sewer.
Those strings sound like they may come from the washing machine. You may end up renting that electric snake. Good luck.
