Floater ball is too high!

My toilet is quite old and has a distinct personality - stubborn. The floater ball rises too high in the tank causing the water to constantly run through the overflow tube. Is there a way to make the ball sit lower in the tank? The water fills just above the line which would be fine if the ball wasn't so high. As soon as I put the tank lid on it presses down on the ball which makes the water run. The level never gets lower so I can only guess that it constantly refills. It is noisy, annoying and wasting more water than I want to think about. If anyone has any suggestions I would be thrilled.
Thanks
Barb

There should be a screw at the vey end of the ball arm. Turning it clockwise will turn off the water at a lower level. This may be enough to allow the ball the clearance it needs so as not to hit the lid and yet still fill the tank. If not, try bending the arm down at a slight angle and then another bend to bring it horizontal again. Its one of those trial and error things. Good luck.
