toilet removal
I'm remodeling my bathroom and plan on replacing my toilet. My problem is, is that the anchor bolt and nuts are rusted beyond repair.I cannot hacksaw them because they are indented into the porcelain. Are there any tricks to get this out without smashing it up?

I'm assuming that the nuts are so rusted that they don't even resemble nuts anymore. Get your Dremel Tool out, or borrow one. If you can grind them off, great. If not, you may have to resort to breaking the porcelain, but you don't have to destroy the entire thing with a sledge hammer. A cold Chisel and hammer will keep the broken bits to the area surrounding the offending bolts.

I would try vice-grips. If the bolt breaks....oh well. Most closet bolts are brass even though they use steel nuts that rust. The soft brass should not take a whole lot to break or break loose the nuts. Good luck.
Additional thought: use a drill and drill through the nut from the top. A drillbit slightly larger than the bolt should work.

This may sound strange, but last year I had the same problem. I was redoing the bathroom while my husband was away - I put some olive oil on the bolts, waited a few hours, sprayed them with WD-40, and then was able to loosen them (after wiping everything down to assure a good grip) -
I know this sounds unusual, but the bolts on the toilet were totally rusted also - maybe the lubricant got into the areas it needed to and gave just enough lubrication?

Debbie, I'm fascinated!
As a trained specialty plumbing contractor and also a trained professional chef, I never thought of the olive oil thing! I guess when I am in the nut and bolt mode, I think of manly things like WD40 and PBBlaster, not olive oil! If it works, it works, and I'm sure someone will make millions of $$$ packaging olive oil in a manly package and selling it at auto stores...
