Leaky bathtub drain

I am trying to stop a leak around the bathtub drain. I can see that it is coming from between the tub and the rubber seal of the drain and it appears to only happen when the tub is filled with water, i.e., it does not appear to leak when the water is running without being stopped. I replaced the worn seal and reinstalled. I used plumbers putty between the brass drain fixture and the tub. I also used teflon tape around the threads of the drain. I inspected the tub and there is no cracks in it. It is now leaking worse than before.

I am at a lose of what else to try other than calling a plumber. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks,

Shawn

I will answer my own question in case it helps someone else out later.

I used plumbers putty between the bottom of the tub and the rubber seal thinking that the somewhat rough surface of the bottom of the tub needed a little more help. This diminished the leak considerably, however, it still leaked a little when the tub was full. It dawned on me that all the water in the tub is quite a bit of weight and might cause the tub to move slightly. So, with the tub full of water I tried tightening the drain basket some more. Sure enough it was easy to tighten the basket another turn or so. This stopped the leak.

So, using plumbers putty between the bottom of the tub and the rubber seal and tightening the drain basket when full of water did the trick.

hey browns,

I'm having a similar problem, have noticed a leak from my upstairs bathroom, at first I thought it was water coming in from poor grouting around the tub, however the other night we had some clothes soaking in the tub and the leak was worse then it has ever been.

This is in a new build house, I'm not a major DIY person but tightening the drain basket, does that need to be done from underneath the tub?
