Is it normal.....
We have a second home that has a smell when we return from long periods being away. The two upstairs toilets do not have any water in the bowls when we return. I think this is the source of the foul smell.
Any idea why the bowl could be dry? Someone has suggested placing plastic wrap over the bowls before we leave.
Any other ideas?
Help,
Thanks,
RichT.

Not sure how long "long periods of time" is. It's very possible that the water evaporates. In that case, the smell is sewer gas coming into the home because there is no water in the toilet trap to stop it. The plastic wrap would probably work. Anything to seal off the toilet opening. If the toilets are dry, then it is probable that all the other traps are dry also. Sinks, tub/shower, any floor drains. These drains will also have to be dealt with. Good luck.
