Bathroom sink pop up stuck

My bathroom sink pop up stopper got stuck in the down position and there is water in the sink and I cant' get it to open. I fiddled around with the horizontal rod, but it didn't help. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

shutsy Welcome to the DIY Forums.
There is a set screw on the linkage that probably came loose. Pull up and down on the knob for draining the sink while you look at the rod, you will be able to see if it is moving the plug mechanism. If not, just push down on the rod going into the drainpipe and it should release the water. Good luck.

Thanks Majak...The set screw isn't loose and the whole mechanism moves when I pull on the knob. I pushed the on the rod and I doesn't drain. It's like the stopper isn't attached to anything.

Place a bucket under the drain and unscrew the nut that holds the stopper mechanism in. That way you can pull the rod and ball assembly out and look to see what happened inside the drainpipe. The stopper catch may have broken off so it is not allowing the rod to operate it.

If the ball rod is intact, sometimes you can get it to engage by moving it horizontally a little, while giving it also an up and down movement.

What often does happen is that the end of the ball rod literally disintegrates. There is nothin left to lift the stopper. I usually can lift the stopper by carefully inserting a knife blade under it.
