noisey toilet

My home is around 10 years old. I have a toilet that makes a surge noise every so often...best way I can describe it...like a rush of water or a part flush. The flapper seems fine...ideas?

thanks

You can test the flapper by pouring a couple cups of coffee (liquid only, no grounds) in the tank and let it sit about a half hour. Check the bowl; and see if the water has been tinted by the coffee. If it is, the flapper is leaking and the tank gets low enough that the fill-valve tells the tank that it needs more water so it turns on the water to fill to the correct level. Good luck.

Try the coffee thing again. It MAY be the rubber gasket between the tank and bowl is leaking. Or it could be a crack in the overflow tube. Look into the overflow tube when the toilet is quiet. if there is water in it, it has a crack.
