Need Help Choosing A New Toilet Please

I think it is time to replace my old toilet. It does not do the best job of flushing and it is very old, so it probably uses too much water.

I went to Home Depot and the toilets run from $100 - $800 or so.

I have no idea what to look for in a toilet (except for the size).

I am looking for the low end in price. Some have stickers saying they were rated best, but I never put too much trust into that anymore.

If I could find one for $150 or less, I would be very happy.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I look for or a brand/model of a suggested toilet?

Thanks

If you go to the Big Box stores, look at the displays they have. It had been a while since I installed a toilet in my own house and could not believe you have to check the discharge hole size. I bought an American Standard toilet. I like the fact that it comes with a Fluidmaster fill-valve. $99.00 and it works just fine. Good luck.

Thanks Majak. That is what I was looking for.

Fluidmaster fill-valve.
What exactly is that? Is that just a system that you get in the back of the tank? Is that the one that instead of the back of the tank filling, it fills a plastic container in the back of the toilet instead?

Thanks again

The Fluidmaster is what you hook the water supply up to. It opens and allows the proper amount of water to fill the tank during and after the flush. The American Standard toilet also has the Fluidmaster instructions for adjusting the water level and any maintenance it may need.

when i put my new toilet, i did some research. The better/ more expansive ones have a larger hole diameter .. i don't remember but i think the largest one in the market was 3" but i may be wrong .. also, the better ones have the inside of the drain hole glazed where as the cheper ones are just rough ceramic. I guess the smooth glazed surface provides a better flow .. so make sure u ask about the diameter size and the glazed inside. other than that that all toilets function the same regardless of the price tag . .i think i paied for $100 for an american standard with largest diamater and inside glazed.

On the displays at the Big Box stores I saw drain openings as small as 1-1/4" and as large as 2". All toilets that were glazed through the trap stated so. This glazing DOES make a difference.

In our new house I tried three different "good flushing" toilets. My favorite is the Kohler with their Ingenium branded flushing system. It does better than the toilet with the vacuum assisted flush system that Consumers Report rated best. Don't loose heart. The really cheap, plain old toilet in our spare bath does quite well and was 1/3 the cost of the others.

Probably a mute point by now... I did as the Dragonmeister did... just two weeks ago... The $99 American standard works great for my new basement and looks just fine.... - actually works better than the fancy Cranes that my builder installed in the other 4 bathrooms...

Actually, I think the toilet was around $79 and the tank around $30 (with fluidmaster valve... details, details, details....

Mine came complete with tank, bowl, wax seal and new closet bolts for $99.00. The bonus was when I opened the carton for the tank and found it came with a Fluidmaster 400A fillvalve.

Toilets

Do you guys happen to know the model of the American Standard that you bought?

I found this toilet and tank at Lowes:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...020&lpage=none

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...020&lpage=none

The total is around $100 and it looks like it would fit just right into my bathroom.

Thanks for all of the advice.

Sorry, threw the box away after installation.... And I wouldn't recognize the differences anyway...

American Standard - around $99.00 - 109.00 - shouldn't go wrong...

I bought the American Standard Cadet RF. I was mistaken about it including the wax seal. I had one here so I used it. Got it at HD as the "other" big Box store didn't have time to assist me.

You gotta love this guy..... You just rang the bell in my brain... The Cadet is the one... Didn't have a wax ring, nor the hold down bolts.... but the fluidmaster was already installed...
