toilet noise
I was just wondering if anyone might know what is going on with my son's toilet. Last night he flushed it and everytime since then it makes a loud fog horn sound ......ONLY WHEN IT IS FLUSHED as it fills back up it makes no noise. as soon as you push the handle to flush it,....it starts making the noise and as soon as all the water is out of the bowl it stops so its only like maybe 2 seconds long but very very loud. any clues.....i just put my home up for sale and need to fix this asap. thank you .......ALSO I FORGOT TO MENTION WHEN I POSTED THIS A FEW MINUTES AGO THAT I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE FILL VALVE ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO....

ladybug24209, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
It is probably the fill valve. It may have debris in it or a bad washer. Best bet is to replace it with a Fluidmaster 400A fill valve. These are about $6 at Home Centers and come with really simple installation instructions. Good luck.

Besides the ease of installation, I prefer the Fluidmaster due to the fact it can be cleaned out should debris get lodged in it. All of this is included in the instruction manual that comes with it.

Once again, the dragonmeister is probably right on.... "Bad" fill valves tend to make the "foghorn" noise when opening or closing just before or after a cycle.. To check it... take the top off the tank.... and flush... you should/may be able to easily identify the source as the valve will vibrate during the foghorn portion of the flush.
I just started using fluidmaster valves myself... and really like them... Easy to install, adjustable, and quiet.

ok i checked the fill valve that i have now which is the one i replaced 3 months ago or so.......and it is a fluid master 400 series .....so i guess its one one i should have and i also checked it when i flushed it and it seems like there is not enough water going in it........i flushed it several times and it kept making the same noise, then i added more water to it a few times and every time i put more water in the tank it never made the noise...and clue on how to get more water to fill the tank ........thank you

I have, in fact, noted that the fluidmaster seems to fill a bit more slowly than what I'm used to.... which is not a problem for me...
However,, the noise isn't normal... methinks you've got some "stuff" stuck in the valve... Turn off the water supply, take the valve apart, noting the assembly order, and clean out any gunk you find.... Hopefully this will sort out the problem...
If that doesn't work.... I'm stymied....
But wait a while... I'll bet the dragonmeister has a clue!

Turn off the water supply below the toilet. Lift the arm that runs down the side of the fillvalve and rotate the top of the valve counter-clockwise 1/8 of a turn while pressing down slightly on the cap. Hold a glass or cup (or any container) over the top of the fillvalve (to prevent splashing) and turn the water on and off a few times. Replace the cap by engaging the lugs and turning 1/8th turn clockwise. Make sure the cap is turned to the locked position. Turn the water supply back on. Good luck.
