Is this the norm?
Please tell me if this is about average pricing. I'm in the Dallas Texas area. Want to take out old Batroom sink and install new sink I just bought. Called a plumber in this area and he quoted me a price of $150.00. I like to fell down. Is this average or normal pricing where you live?
Thanks

Thats pretty close to normal. He may have estimated a little longer timewise in case he had a problem. Most places also charge a port to port fee. This means you pay for the time it takes him to get from one job to yours. While people complain about this, someone has to pay for gas, wear and tear on his vehicle and time.

If I use a licensed, insured plumber...That's cheap...
A handyman special and you have no idea about insurance, it would be average to just above.
Costs vary all over the country. What's high in your area may be cheap in other areas, or vise-versa.

I'm an avid DIYer - having called a "pro" probably once in the last 10 years. Not that I don't like them.... I respect them immensely - I like to tackle projects myself and have that warm fuzzy feeling of accomplishment - not to mention being able to take my wife out for a nice dinner with what I saved.
In this case... $150 sounds pretty good.... This guy, making a living and supporting his family - has to drive to your home, spend a couple/few hours doing the changeout - drive home. He will bring specialized tools/materials to complete the job - saving you those 2 extra trips to the hardware store because you forgot the "left handed wing nut".. When he's done, your sink will fill and drain without leaks - it'll look good and feel secure. During the entire process you have the opportunity to sit back and, if it's after 9am... drink a beer. And... if anything goes wrong in a couple of weeks - he'll come back and correct it - free!

Thanks for your replys. I'm the last person in the world that wants to under pay a man or woman for doing a job that I hired them to do but changing out sinks is not rockett science. Take out the screws it's anchord down with, drop the P trap unhook the stopper and take it out. Now place the new sink in the hole , screw it down put the ipes back up and hook up the stoper. Run a little silcone around things and clean up your mess.
I have all the respect in the world for a man or woman that earns a living in home repair or construction. I myself wouldnt make a dime at it I guess. Obivously I would be working to cheap to begin with huh?

You're right, it's not rocket science.. but you're paying for the guy's knowledge as well as his time. I noticed he gave you a quote over the phone, which I understand, given the scope of the job. When he does that, he doesn't know what other factors he might run into (leaky valves, mis-matched pipe sizes, etc.). So he gives you a quote that will cover the possibilities. Were he there already doing something else - or at the neighbors house, he might have quoted a lesser number.
Don't get me wrong - $150 for a job that would take me an hour or so to do is more than I would want to pay. But that's why I do it myself.
