Shower Drain in Mobile Home

I had fun reviewing all 710 postings under this heading. No, I didn't read them all. I was scanning to see if anyone had a similar problem that I could use for reference. I didn't have any success.

I'm a handyman and received a call from the mother (Linda) of a previous customer. Linda lives in a mobile home in Laporte, Ohio. She told me there's a metal ring around the drain in the shower that needs to be replaced. She has the ring and some sealant. She thought she could replace this ring from within the shower itself, but in speaking with friends in the mobile home park, she was told it can only be done from underneath. I told her I'd do some searching to get more information, and here I am. Can anyone help?

Respectfully,

Handy Matt

I assume she is referring to the drain flange. This depends on the type she has. Some screw into the drain pipe from above. Others have a nut under the shower that holds the drainpiece in and then is secured to the piping. Good luck.

Thank you for the quick reply. It doesn't sound too difficult (I'll keep my fingers crossed). I'll have to check it out and let you know.

Repair Update

I had a chance to get to the mobile home last Saturday. There's good news and bad news. I was able to get to the shower drain from withing the mobile home. There's an access panel in the bedroom (floor to ceiling) that exposed the shower plumbing and the drain underneath. The bad news is that the flange was secured to the drain pipe underneath that the flange broke. Part of the flange threads remained with the flange and the other section were left in the drain pipe underneath. The flange measured 4-1/4" in diameter and the threads were standard 1-1/2" diameter. I traveled all over Lorain County, Ohio looking for a new flange. I went to Home Depot, Lowe's, a trailer sales/service location, Willow Hardware, and Gross Plumbing Supply. No one had that flange available. I went with the owner, Linda, to the mobile park office and they had a catalog (sorry, I don't know the name) and there we found the part. I received a call today from Linda to let me know the part has arrived. I plan to go Friday to get it finished. I'm hoping the threads still in the drain pipe will come out easily. Any suggestions on how that can be removed without any more damage occurring?

Respectfully,

Handy Matt
