Toilet runs on it's own
Hello,
I just had a new fill valve installed in my toilet. It has periodically started to run on it's own for about 30 seconds. Any ideas?
Thank you,
Robyn Guedel

Sounds like the flapper is leaking. When the water level gets low, the fill valve refills the tank. You can check the flapper with a couple cups of coffee (liquid only, no grounds) poured into the tank. Watch the bowl and if the water discolors from the coffee, the flapper is leaking. You may be able to adjust the chain so that it "just" allows the flapper to seal but still gives a full flush. Good luck.

We see a lot of bad flapper valves in our rental units because people put those bleach tablets in the tank to keep the bowl clean. Unfortunately, bleach is harmful to the rubber and causes it to lose seal and leak. I have seen water bills triple because they didn't know they had a toilet leak.
