Shutting water for Tub

Hello,

I'm very new and try to search this info, but i guess it's too basic that nobody even wrote about it. I need to pull bath faucet out. I guess I need to shut water down for the tub, but...
Do I need to shut the water b/f pulling the faucet knob? It's American Standard. The reason I'm taking the faucet knob is...

I can't get hot water unless I twist the knob. My plan is to remove the stopper or relocate it so i can rotate the knob little further.

Thank you advance for your help.

It is not real clear what you are trying to do, but yes you can pull off the handle without turning off the water. It sounds as if you have a temperature control valve and you are trying to set the maximum temperature higher. You should go to the manufacturer's website and see if you can download an instruction sheet. You want the maximum temperature out of the shower to be 120°F.
