removal of shower stem

I am attempting to replace the shower and have not been able to remove the shower stem. Any ideas on how to remove it?

At the big box stores they sell socket wrenches specifically for stems of all types/lengths/sizes. Around $24 and this will remove the stem.

There are two solutions in addition to the above. Some smaller hardware stores rent the above tool. I rented mine for $8 just the other day. However, after renting it and removing the stem I bought my replacement stem and in the Moen stem box there was a small plastic tool for loosening the old stem so if I had known exactly which brand and style of stem I could have saved the $8 I guess- but I didn't install the mixer valve myself so I didn't know what brand it was. Hope this helps.

When you said replace shower you mean the walls are out? Now would be agood time to replace an old valve. I like Moen the cartridge is held in with ahorseshow clip, not screwed in.
