Delta tub and sink repair

The house and fixtures go back to late '70's to early '80's. The tub/shower and sink faucets are single handle Delta products. The internals include a 2 piece plastic ball and diamond shape shaft connected to a clear plastic handle.

Per a drawing in a parts catalog at Lowe's the metal cap unscrews for access to internal parts.

How do you do this without ruining the finish on the faucet?

In a past life, I twisted one of these out of the wall on a shower. On that design the mixing valve stands out about an inch from the brass body and is connect by only 3 small copper tubes.

The metal caps each have a pair of slots in a plastic insert on top that look like they could accept a tool. The plastic is soft and does not seem to help.

I seem to remember from 10 years ago that the tub and sink look similar but come apart differently. Again, the exploded view in the catalog is no help.

I am trying to fix drips out the faucet and from around the handle.

Except for the question about removing the cap, your post is a bit fuzzy on what questions you are asking.
With the shower handle removed, take the tool that comes with the Delta rebuild kit (it is a type of spanner wrench on one end and hex wrench on the other) and loosen up (counterclockwise) the white plastic ring at the top of the cap. It has four notches in it (3,6,9 & 12 O'Clock positions) for the spanner wrench. Once that is loose, try to unscrew the metal cap, using your hand. If the cap won't budge, use a pair of channel locks with a rag. When replacing the cap, hand tighten the cap and then tighten the ring with the spanner until the shower handle is snug.

Chrome cap. Try a rubber strap wrench. If that doesn't work take the packing ring out. Take a torch heat the cap a couple seconds. It will screw right off. May still have a few marks. The rest of the rebuild stuff will come in the kit.
