How to change the leaking flush

Hello,
I am newbie and would like to change the leaking flush. AFter flushing sometimes the flush still goes on and water also goes on in the tolilet sink/bowl. After clicking the flush handle up it stops and sometimes have to do it again and again.
Any ideas and picture on how to change the valve etc. will be helpful.
Thanks very much in advance.
Regards,

flush valves

You did not indicate whether the toilet runs a little or a lot. If it is a little, you need a new flapper. If it is a lot, something is getting hung up.
Fixing it depends upon the style of flush valve. The most common style of flush valve uses a rubber flapper of some sort (there are a few different styles). When you push down on the lever to flush the toilet, it lifts a chain connected to the flapper. Watch that chain when you flush and see if it is hanging up the flapper valve. It could be a little too long. Many flapper valves attach to the stand pipe (overflow tube) by hooking onto two small posts sticking out of the tube. The flapper sort of hinges on these two posts. It is possible that the flapper is getting hung up there. It might just need a new flapper. A new flapper may slip down over the tube or may just hook onto two small posts. These are very easy to replace.
There are a few styles of toilets, especially one-piece lowboys, that have proprietary fill and flush mechanisms. And there is the Mansfield style of flush valve, which looks like a tube that rides up and down on a shaft. They usually don't get hung up, unless the chain is getting caught on something.
Post back and let us know what you find.
