Dry Toilet Tank

I have a toilet that if I manually fill the tank with water I can flush the toilet (water level in bowl is not affected) but water drains right out of tank. What exactly do I need to check/replace and how?

Thanks,
Maggie

maggieck, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
Looks like you have a bad flapper. If the flapper is bad (torn or cracked) it allows water to drain into the bowl. It may just have calcium deposits on the seating surface. Lift the flapper and run your finger around the area it sits on. Also check the face of the flapper for anything that would hold it up off the sealing surface. Make sure the chain is not holding it up also. You can adjust the chain length. Adjust it so that the flapper "just" seals. This will allow proper flushing and seal. Pour a couple cups of coffee (liquid only no grounds) into the tank when it has water in it and if the water color in the bowl changes, the flapper is leaking. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
