Question tub faucet repair...won't turn.

We are in a rental house with a tub/shower with 2 faucets...hot and cold. Recently the cold started to not turn the water on. We tried tightening the screw which helped for a few days. Then we removed the faucet head to see the extender is worn. I found a matching part at our hardware store, but cannot remove the bad one. Do we need to call a plumber? Is the extender the same thing as a stem? We would like to avoid getting the landlord involved since He takes weeks to make repairs. Thanks.

If you can, take pictures of the actual faucet you have so that we may better help you. It seems like calcium buildup may be the reason you cannot remove the assembly. Twisting in different directions may help in removing the extender. Need to know what the brand name of the faucet is.

faucet trouble still!

The double faucet in our tub/shower is MintCraft, as well as the replacement extender. I have not taken a picture yet...sorry. We were able to take the faucet handle off and discovered the extender was worn down and turning the knob no longer turned the extender. Therefore we need to change out the extender. The extender is the part that causes the cold water to flow so turning it only turns on the cold water or turns off the cold water. This is a shower unit that is sealed to the wall, so we can't get behind the unit. We have tried just pulling the extender to see if it would come out...nothing. We also tried turning it further left or right to try and remove, but again nothing. I am afraid we will need a plumber to help us. Any ideas will be helpful. I can also get a picture if you feel it would help. Thank you.
